Roll a Spelling Word- For this activity I put my students in pairs. They will need one dice. I usually have them share the dice. They roll the dice to know what spelling word to write. Color Me By High Frequency Word- This a coloring activity where students practice the High Frequency Words of the week. These are GREAT for bell work Vocab Flip-Flap- Print these pages back to back. Students fold these pages “hotdog” ways. They fill out the foldable accordingly. If they are struggling with the definition portion, they can look it up in the glossary at the back of their book. My Family Tree Craft & Writing- This is an adorable writing and craft activity that pairs nicely with the story. Using a Glossary Book Detective Booklet- This is a booklet that helps students use the glossary to help their understanding of words. Compare & Contrast Families- This is a Venn Diagram to practice comparing the family in the story with their own family. Spelling & High Frequency Practice- Students will read, trace, write, and rainbow write the spelling words and High Frequency words of the week. My Family Tri-Fold- Print these pages front to back. The paper will fold like a brochure. Students will use the story to fill out the Tri-Fold. Complete sentences Foldable Booklet- This is a foldable booklet to practice making complete sentences. Common Core Addressed: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. This is addressed in the Tri Fold CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area. This is addressed in the glossary booklet, vocab flip-flaps, and tri-fold. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.2.6 Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe. This is addressed in the Tri-Fold CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. This is addressed in the spelling and High Frequency Word Activities. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. This is addressed in the writing activity. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
