Plant Book List
(The list below contains Amazon Affiliate Links for the books)
As I said before there are so many plant books for kids out there. I like books that cover Plant Needs, Parts of a Plant, Plant Life cycle, Pollination, and Germination.
From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons
I love this one as it covers Parts of a Flower really well with AMAZING illustrations! It is also an easier read than some of Gail Gibbons’ other books.
Also… check out this anchor chart for when teaching parts of a flower! All the heart eyes! Right!?
I love teaching with interactive anchor charts! They are interactive because well…your students build it with you! I am in major struggle land when I try to draw things freehand so these interactive anchor charts are a life saver for me! Click the image or click here and you can get it in my Parts of a Flower Activities.
Then also they need a chance to build the parts of a flower themselves. So they then get to make their own craft!
National Geographic Readers: Seed to Plant
These National Geographic readers are great as they use real images through out the text! A must in any classroom!
If You Plant a Seed by Kadir Nelson
I love this one as you can dive in to the metaphor of planting personal seeds in your own life, but also watch in the beautiful illustration as the plants grow in the story. A great tie in for a teacher;s plant unit.
A Tree is a Plant by Clyde Robert Bulla
Have you heard of this plant book? I love this one as it goes over different types of trees and also still covers the life cycle! Perfect for any plant unit for first grade!
I made a unit for A Tree is a Plant a few years back for Journeys 1st Grade. Honestly though… these activities could be used during any Plant Unit for 1st grade. Check it out here or click the image below.
If you are working on plant science projects with your students this one is a must. As it takes the student with a step by step process of a plant experiment!
The Garden from Frog and Toad Together
by Arnold Lobel
I almost didn’t add this one to the list, but then I was reading to my daughter this story from Frog and Toad Together and this really is perfect to tie in with any plant activities for the classroom. Although it is fiction it brings up with students what different plant needs are. As frog and toad are trying to get the seeds to grow they find yelling does not work and so much more. It will have your students laughing and steers right into any plant needs lesson with perfection!
Right after you read the story tie in the real plant needs of a plant. I have created a brochure that students can read as a close read, plus an interactive anchor chart and a student plant needs craft to teach this all to students in a very engaging format.
Plant activities for kindergarten come in the troves with this book. So I won’t add to much to this one. But it is fabulous for teaching about seeds and how they travel. It also shows a seed must land in the right spot in order to grow again taping into Plant Needs. Then going through the life cycle of a plant.
Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert
This one is great as it talks about gardening. I have read this one with my preschooler and is great for teaching about gardening for preschool.
Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt
by Kate Messner
This one is great as it taps into what else is going on in the garden as things are growing. Everything is alive around those little seeds and plants!
by Bridget Heos
Kids don’t think about how what they are eating often comes from the ground…like a delicious tasting taco! That is what is great about this book. It even breaks down a taco shell for the kids and explaining how a corn seed as needs and everything they would have to do to get it to grow!
Amazing Plant Bodies: Tiny to Gigantic
by Ellen Lawrence
This book covers some of the smallest and tallest plants while also discussing what plants provide for us! It covers parts of a plant, plant needs, and so much more! So basically your entire plant unit is tied up into one amazing book with beautiful photographs and illustrations!
