These are a set of activities to use with Journeys 3rd gread Unit 5 Lesson 24 Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves
I have created a range of activities for you to use throughout this lesson. Some of the activities may take more than one day (i.e. Comprehension Crafts).
Vocab Flip-Flap: Students practice writing the vocabulary words in sentences, and writing definitions. I suggest doing this activity prior to reading the story so when they see the vocabulary word in the reading they will have an understanding of it.
ABC Order Spelling Words: Print these pages two sided. One page they write the words in ABC order the other they pick 7 of the words to put into sentences. As an extra challenge you could always have them put two spelling words in each sentence.
Roll a Spelling word: Students will need dice for this activity. They roll a die to find out what word to write. This can also be done in partners as a game as a race to see who can finish first.
Interactive Journal Pages: There are 3 interactive Journal pages in this unit. One for the prefixes re- and un- this is a great way to solidify the spelling words while also working on a vocabulary strategy. Two for the Adverbs/Complex Sentences- students will refresh their understanding of adverbs while also creating a complex sentence using an adverb clause. Three for the Shades of Meaning. Students practice writing different shades of meaning for 3 different words.
Author’s Purpose Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves Craft: This is an adorable craft that students make their own Dog-of-the-Sea-Waves (a seal) while also writing about why they think the author wrote the selection.
5 Fab Sheets: Students write 5 things in two different ways for the sheets one is for describing the 5 different brothers the other is finding 5 words in the text that is from a different language. Also a great fast finisher or also a homework option.
Spelling Writing Pages: Students practice tracing, writing, and rainbow writing the spelling words. This could be used during centers or as another homework option.
Comprehension Tri-Fold: Students answer questions about the week’s selection. They could do this in small groups or individually as an informal assessment.
