The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman Journeys 3rd Grade Supplement Activities

These are a set of activities to use with Journeys 3rd gread Unit 5 Lesson 23 The Journey of Oliver K. Woodman.

I have created a range of activities for you to use throughout this lesson. Some of the activities may take more than one day (i.e. Comprehension Crafts).

Vocab Flip-Flap: Students practice writing the vocabulary words in sentences, and writing definitions. I suggest doing this activity prior to reading the story so when they see the vocabulary word in the reading they will have an understanding of it.
ABC Order Spelling Words: Print these pages two sided. One page they write the words in ABC order the other they pick 7 of the words to put into sentences. As an extra challenge you could always have them put two spelling words in each sentence.
Roll a Spelling word: Students will need dice for this activity. They roll a die to find out what word to write. This can also be done in partners as a game as a race to see who can finish first.
Interactive Journal Pages: There are 3 interactive Journal pages in this unit. One for the suffixes, another for possessive nouns and pronouns, and finally sequence of events. The sequence of events is a great activity for your students to do right after the story is read. Then you can bring them up to discuss together the sequence of events.
Sequence of Events Oliver K. Woodman Craft: This is an adorable craft that students make Oliver K. Woodman out of paper, and do a more formal writing of the sequence of events of the story.
Writing Letter Pages to Characters: These letter pages are great fast finishers for those who get done early. They can write a letter to Oliver K. Woodman and Uncle Ray.
5 Fab Things About Oliver K. Woodman: Students write 5 things about Oliver K. Woodman in the hands. Also another great fast finisher or also a homework option.
Spelling Writing Pages: Students practice tracing, writing, and rainbow writing the spelling words. This could be used during centers or as another homework option.
Comprehension Tri-Fold: Students answer questions about the week’s selection. They could do this in small groups or individually as an informal assessment.
